2015 Summer Project “A Child’s Dream”

We all know that children eagerly wait for summer vacation, a time for swimming and fun! This is especially true fom children who live in orphanages. They dream of the possibility of spending a portion of their summers somewhere other than their familiar walls and surroundings. Deep in their hearts is buried a desire to be like “other” children, to spend their summer holidays with relatives or with a family who would take them into their homes and share with them the simple joys of summer.
As we have visited and served the children living in Minties Children’s Home, we have heard these same longings for summer again and again: a desire to leave the city and the daily routine of life in an orphanage. We were told by Gintarė Tučkuvienė, director of Minties Children‘s Home, that their summer dreams also include going to camp. (www.mintiesnamai.lt) The hope and promise of camp, a special place to be with old friends, to meet and make new friends, games, swimming, learning new skills, and spending time around the camp fire is a strong motivational force in the lives of these children. Camp is promised as a prize for good behavior and good grades at school.
There are currently 49 children living in Minties Children’s Home and this summer we have the incredible opportunity to send 10 children to summer camp. We have chosen to send these children to Discovery English language camp near the city of Varena. Discovery Camp has been serving children in Lithuania for the past 16 summers. Discovery camp has the ministry philosophy and goal to be “one, big, happy family,” and has earned the name of being a place where special attention is placed upon the needs of each camper and of being a safe, positive, friendly environment where learning is fun. What also makes Discovery Camp unique is that each summer about 20 adults and teens from America volunteer each summer to serve at camp. Steven Davis, Director of Discovery has agreed with our desire to help these children attend camp along with the team of weekly volunteers who serve every Wednesday at Minties Children’s Home.
Discovery English language camp will take place this summer from June 19th-July 4th.

The 1st session is for children from 11-13 years of age. The total cost of one week of camp is 100 Euros.

The 2nd camp session is for teens, ages 14-18. This session is one day longer and costs 115 Euros.

The price of camp includes travel, food and lodging.

We are asking for your assistance to help us fulfill the dreams of summer camp for these 10 children. We are planning on sending 4 children to the 1st session of camp and 6 teenagers trip to the 2nd session.
We hope to have collect the total amount of needed support by May 30th.
